Community contribution #2

I do not have any public social media presence. There are definitely positives and negatives to this in general, and in terms of jobs I think it gets complicated even further. On the pros side, there isn’t anything online that would cause an employer to not hire me. However, I don’t have anything public that shows my interests or who I am as a person. I could see this preventing a possible employer to not have as much interest in me compared to someone who has shared their work experience and has posts that show an employer they would fit the role. The employer would be able to look at the person who shares their work experience (or other information) and get somewhat of a sense if they would be fit for that job. It varies widely depending on the person of what information is out there, and also largely on what the job is but I should work on sharing at least some things.

Personally, I think data privacy and security is more limiting than promoting a PLN. Even something as simple as logging into Canva to create the visitors and resident map – I was asked twice if I wanted to create a passkey from my fingerprint to have a quicker way to log in. This was followed by three emails; one to confirm my identity, one to notify me of a login, and one to promote the Canva membership. Data privacy and security is important to me but so is convenience. When there are sites that I have to log in with a username and password every time and then get a code from my email, sometimes even followed by a security question, it discourages me from using the website/platform. I had not even thought about it until I went to do this assignment but I would much rather store some of my information on a website that seems a little less secure than have to go through multiple steps to get access every time. Prior to this class, I had very little information on online privacy. I thought that since I make something like a presentation for school, the security of the website didn’t matter. However, I have learned that platforms collect a lot more information than what you directly put into it. They can track location, search history, camera and microphone access, and many more aspects that I never would have thought of. Now that I have this information, I see how much even using one insecure website can impact my privacy.
